Daft Trump Officials Fire/Rehire Nuclear Weapons Staff Unaware They Oversee U.S. Arsenal

By Nukewatch Staff

On February 14, Reuters reported that the unchartered Department of Government Efficiency had laid off about 325 employees of the National Nuclear Security Administration which controls the U.S. nuclear arsenal. The overzealous know nothings with Elon Musk’s DOGE, “did not seem to know this agency oversees America’s nuclear weapons,” according to CNN.

On February 18th, the BBC reported that “more than 300 NNSA staff were let go” but that the Department of Energy had objected, telling CNN that “less than 50 people” were dismissed from NNSA, including staff at sites where nuclear weapons are built.

The chaotic Trump administration has since reversed the firings but was struggling to reach the laid-off employees because they had been locked out of their federal email accounts. After an outcry from Congress, NNSA emailed a memo to staff, obtained by NBC News, which read: “The termination letters for some NNSA probationary employees are being rescinded, but we do not have a good way to get in touch with those personnel.” — Reuters, Feb. 16; CNN, Feb. 14; BBC, Feb. 18, 2025
