On April 2, the Common Council of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, unanimously adopted a nuclear weapons abolition resolution calling on U.S. leaders to: actively pursue a verifiable agreement among nuclear-armed states to eliminate their nuclear arsenals; renounce the option of using nuclear weapons first; end the sole, unchecked authority of any U.S. president to launch a nuclear attack; take U.S. nuclear weapons off hair-trigger alert; and cancel plans to replace the entire U.S. nuclear arsenal with enhanced weapons.
Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson signed the measure which was introduced by Council Member Marina Dimitrijevic. The resolution is part of the national Physicians for Social Responsibility’s campaign Back from the Brink, and was pushed by a coalition of 18 state groups led by Peace Action-Wisconsin, Milwaukee Veterans for Peace, Physicians for Social Responsibility-Wisconsin, and the United Nations Association of Greater Milwaukee. Representatives of the groups who spoke to the Council in favor of the resolution were Julie Enslow, Pam Richard, Steve Watrous, Paula Rogge, and Bill Christofferson, one of Nukewatch’s founders in 1979.
