The Spent Fuel Handling Recapitalization Project, a lengthy name for the upgrade of nuclear waste storage facilities at the Idaho National Laboratory, is now more than $2 billion over budget and three years behind completion. The Government Accountability Office was asked by lawmakers to report on this ballooning budget and timeline. The new storage facility is intended to hold radioactive waste from nuclear-powered U.S. Navy warships and is run by a joint office of the Navy and U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration known as Naval Reactors. The latest estimates for cost and project completion are from 2022 and the GAO is awaiting more up to date figures. — Breaking Defense, Dec. 12, 2024; GAO-25-106997, gao.gov, Dec. 12, 2024
