Opposition Continues to Proposed Nuclear Waste Site in Northwestern Ontario

Canada’s Nuclear Waste Management Organization has selected a site on Treaty #3 lands ⸺ just north of Lake Superior, 90 miles northeast of Minnesota’s Voyageurs National Park, and 150 miles north of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness ⸺ to dump all of the nation’s high-level radioactive waste from nuclear reactors.

This proposed Deep Geological Repository would be 650-800 meters underground with many rooms where abandoned radioactive waste would remain deadly for hundreds of thousands of years. Construction is set to begin in 2033, and operations to start in 2045.

Leaders from four different First Nations spoke at a recent rally to oppose the plan, attended by roughly 400 people. Fort William Chief Michele Solomon said: “We’re … saying no to nuclear waste that threatens our life, threatens our water, threatens the animals, threatens the Earth, threatens our children, threatens our very existence.” To learn more about the continued opposition visit knownuclearwaste.ca and wethenuclearfreenorth.ca.
